Thu March 27, 2007 Monitor letter by TJ Taub

I don't know TJ. I think she sells real estate with Los Alamos Properties, a realty business. Her letter recommends a campaign to educate us about the value of broadband here in Los Alamos, and wider participation, specifically local business, medical and educational sectors, in Los Alamos County's discussion.

Why don't we have dozens of people clamoring for faster, better, cheaper internet, at least as big a contingent as the Performing Arts Center campaign was?

Perhaps TJ is right and we need a campaign to build interest in faster Internet access. In talking with people that I run into it seems that very few have any real interest in faster access. Most want cheaper access, but then a few will say gee it would be nice to download videos. Work at home, remote education and other applications don't surface as needs.

I think this is just one of those Los Alamos things... the town waffles and complains over and over about things for 10 or 20 years before someone just goes out and does it because they were tired of waiting (or it becomes inevitable that it should be there.) After travelling the state, I am more and more amazed at how 'backwards' the Los Alamos County is becoming compared to the rest of the state. Socorro is a poorer town, but getting internet to the house is a major goal. Magdelena and Pie Town are also working towards it.

Los Alamos will have another set of meetings and committee reports and after the town center is revitalized they will think about it ...
